Small Treasures: Cinnamon & Applesauce Ornaments

While putting Christmas ‘stuff’ away – there are always emotions that come along with it. Just like when unwrapping ornaments when in the decorating spirit, there are also emotions that go along with packing it all back away for another year. If you are saying: yes, me too. Don’t forget to feel into your emotions. Even if tears come, honor that and let them come. Each tear and memory can hold so many different emotions. Not just sad but thankful for time shared that created memories that may have also resulted in treasures you now have – all through love shared!

Which is what brings me to sharing this recipe with you. These ornaments bring so much to my heart and mind. Memories with my Momma – my girls with their Gran-ma (that’s how she used to write it and to this day, this is how they like to see it written – everything means something different to everyone). The time together, our hands in the kitchen measuring, stirring, rolling out the dough AND patience because little hands and minds work differently. It even meant understanding that the process might also include tv breaks or play time to switch things up for their attention span (each age is different of course).

These ornaments are easy to make and only two ingredients are used. Plus, if you like the smell of cinnamon – they will definitely fill your kitchen with a Christmas scent.

Simple Cinnamon Applesauce Ornaments (initially found on Pinterest but this is the direct link. They also have it noted about a movie: THE STAR. It is a very cute movie with so much meaning. We would definitely recommend watching it if you haven’t.)

Tips:

  • The directions state to use a toothpick to make the hole at the top. You can also use a straw for a quick easy hole.
  • You can decorate them after they cool. You can see in the picture that some have a very fine colored ‘dust’, some are painted, some have little decorations glued on or stickers can be used. It’s fun to let them be creative.
  • Using different cookie cutters are fun too. I would just keep in mind to use ones roughly the same size for each pan you bake so they bake evenly.
  • The beautiful angel was actually done by my niece when she was younger. In which she is now 24! xoxo

I found this poem after my mom passed away. I thought it was so beautiful and used it as shown above for my brothers and myself. My mom was beyond an amazing woman that is missed like crazy. I do like to stop and read this poem from time to time to help hug my heart. May it hug anyone else’s that needs it for loved ones you have lost and miss!
