Chunky Applesauce Recipe
Mmm…tis the season for a warm the soul recipe repost.
If you can remember your family making applesauce, let’s take a minute to step back in time. Let your senses slip away to that oh so dreamy aroma that filled the house on a crisp Fall day. Apples & cinnamon simmering together – warm, rich, sweet, spicy…all coming together for the end result of that delicious pleasure of homemade applesauce running over your taste buds.
AND – if your family didn’t make homemade applesauce, no worries. You can step out to start new traditions within your home! š
BONUS: This is a much simpler process than how it was done ‘in the old days’, lol. Don’t get me wrong, I love sticking with certain ways from the good ol’ days. I mean, I still lay out our bread to dry for the full process of making stuffing for Thanksgiving. However, trying this recipe, I am all for throwing it in a crock pot and letting it do it’s thing.
NOTE: Personal changes made…
- APPLES: I typically just get a mix – and tip – you can buy seconds from an orchard. It will save you money! AND I usually just fill the crock pot vs count how many apples I’m doing. The apples cook down so you are left with about half a crock pot full of applesauce – so this is another reason I ‘filler up’.
- SUGAR: I believe I use 1/4 cup of sugar and let the natural sugar run it’s course from the apples.
- CINNAMON: We prefer less cinnamon, so I just sprinkle a little in. You may prefer more or none at all.
- WHEN DONE: I use a potato smasher to breakdown the apples until we have a consistency we like. It’s still somewhat chunky, just not chunky, chunky.
SEPARATE THOUGHT that crossed my mind. You could probably keep your chunks larger – lessen the cook time – and then use it as a hot apple topping over vanilla ice cream (while maybe adding some caramel drizzle and whip topping if you so desire).
